The META-MUSEUM consortium has entered an exciting new phase of growth and implementation. Over the past few months, our consortium has been hard at work translating deep theoretical insights into tangible, real-world tools. From expanding audience research to developing immersive museum apps and introducing virtual cultural experiences into clinical healthcare settings, these interconnected efforts are redefining how diverse communities interact with cultural heritage.
Theoretical framework and TransforMEANS Theory
To deepen our understanding of how cultural heritage drives transformation and social inclusion, researchers are re-opening the project’s comprehensive audience survey. Building on the initial data collection, this phase introduces an expanded sampling strategy that includes both active museum visitors and non-goers. This dual approach enables a much more nuanced analysis of public motivations and barriers, allowing researchers to pinpoint emerging trends and enrich the project’s foundational findings.
The Evolution of attaCHbox and Our Online Presence
Technological innovation has taken a major leap forward with the development of attaCHbox, a mobile application designed for interactive museum experiences. The app now features a functional base with a manual in-app browsing. To complement this rollout, a fresh visual identity has been established using the project’s signature dark blue and red palette, alongside a specialized accessibility mode.
As the team transitions from prototypes to pilot-ready software, current efforts are shifting toward real-world deployment. A call for content is active, inviting pilot museum partners to integrate authentic materials into upcoming interactive modules like quizzes and personalized summaries. Simultaneously, the project’s website has a refreshed homepage design. Future web updates will incorporate advanced GEO and SEO to maximize visibility across traditional search engines and AI-driven discovery tools.
Secure Data Management and Pilot Readiness
To handle the data generated by these applications and field trials, the consortium launched its Central Repository. This secure, scalable infrastructure provides a shared workspace for partners to analyze multimodal data while ensuring absolute compliance with FAIR principles and GDPR privacy requirements.
This setup provides a critical foundation as live testing draws near for Pilot 1 at MuséoParc Alésia. Teams are currently fine-tuning initial digital prototypes and creating specialized content to complement physical museum exhibits. Looking beyond traditional spaces, developers are also collaborating on an accompanying version of these prototypes tailored for hospital patients, with a strong focus on immersive Virtual Reality experiences.
Storytelling, Neuroscience, and Clinical Interventions
These digital solutions feed directly into upcoming neuroscience museum experiments. Partners have spent the last few months weaving compelling storytelling components into the tools being evaluated. The experimental roadmap begins this September at MuséoParc Alésia, before traveling to the MAC in Barcelona and the Museo Egizio in Turin. To optimize the experience, the team recently tested these narrative concepts with young students to refine the tracking setup.
The healing power of culture is another major avenue of exploration. Researchers are finalizing an experimental protocol to introduce digital and virtual cultural experiences directly into hospital settings this November. This clinical study will investigate whether virtual access to cultural heritage can measurably improve patient confidence, emotional wellbeing, and psychological resilience, delivering concrete evidence on the role culture can play in supporting healthcare quality of life.
Capacity Building and Co-Creation Activities on Instagram
Beyond research, the project continues to emphasize capacity building. The latest version of our educational modules was successfully put to the test at the FSK’s 17th Piranova International Summer School in Koper. This refined curriculum is now being rolled out to international students attending the EMA Summer School in Nicosia, Cyprus; Kostanjevica na Krki, Slovenia; and Östersund, Sweden.
We believe that cultural heritage should be co-created and reinterpreted by everyone. Soon, we are launching an interactive campaign on our Instagram channel. We warmly invite you to follow our page, participate in our upcoming creative challenges.
