META-MUSEUM

Shaping the Future of Digital Cultural Heritage

11-12 June, 2025 | Warsow, Poland

Europeana 2025 was held on 11-12 June 2025 under the patronage of the Polish Presidency of the Council of the EU! This hybrid conference was organized in collaboration and partnership with the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage, the National Institute of Cultural Heritage and the POLIN Museum in Warsaw, which hosted the conference.

Over 600 people attended Europeana 2025, including 275 in person in the award-winning POLIN Museum of the History of Polish Jews. The conference welcomed in-person participants from over 33 countries, and people joined online from 65 countries. The conference offered 36 sessions packed with 62 presentations, workshops, projects and talks, led by a fantastic line-up of 113 speakers. The programme touched on some of the biggest issues shaping the sector and the common European data space for cultural heritage, from cybersecurity to the complex choices around adopting AI.

Keynote speeches In the three keynote speeches, Anne-Sophie Panzer and Stefan Marx from ZAUBAR emphasized the fundamental role of the accessibility of cultural data in narrative innovation and immersive experiences; Dr. Julia Noordegraaf from the University of Amsterdam demonstrated how the “Time Machine” project transforms historical data into an innovative engine for education and public participation; Brigitte Aga from the MUNCH Museum shared how to introduce AI in a prudent way to give new life and meaning to the interpretation of cultural heritage.

JENA Team-Prof. Dr. Sander Münster from Friedrich-Schiller-Universität Jen, Humanities Department, also represented the JENA Team at the conference and introduced the META-MUSEUM project to cultural heritage practitioners from all over Europe at the conference presentation.

The META-MUSEUM project aims to explore cultural experiences through a neurophysiological and cognitive lens,  focusing on emotional dynamics and the effectiveness of narrative solutions in fostering visitors’ emotions,  deeper understanding,  and confidence. This project emphasizes the transformative potential of cultural heritage (CH) and seeks to engage audiences in meaningful, empathic ways, ultimately enhancing public confidence in and connection to CH.

The goal of WP4 (mainly managed by the Jena META Museum team) is to develop and design testable components and prototypes, and evaluate them in experiments and pilots.  The main task of WP4 is to build a model and technical prototype framework based on the TMt theoretical framework and verifiable practical experience data.  This can be regarded as a “toolbox” integrating narrative, media and technology.  Through digital tools and activities based on cultural venues, participation, co-creation, and the connection between individuals and culture have been promoted, and a process of co-creation and transformation in the digital age has been constructed.

The presentation and introduction of the META-MUSEUM project aroused strong interest and in-depth discussions among the audience.
