Greetings dear META-MUSEUM community,
Autumn is here, and with it comes a fresh edition of our newsletter: bringing you the latest milestones, insights, and updates from across the META-MUSEUM consortium.
From testing our digital prototypes in real-world settings to exploring how culture influences empathy and resilience through neuroscience, our research is actively moving into real-world impact. We are also looking forward to gathering in Barcelona late next month for our 5th General Assembly to reflect on our progress and plan the next steps in our last year.
In this issue, you will also find our Project Manager on Politecnico di Torino’s new podcast, a blog post on museums as “safe places,” the launch of the CONNECT EU HERITAGE Cluster, and details on MetaHeritage’s Pitching Showcase on 5 October.
We hope you enjoy the read!
Discover Advancements Across META-MUSEUM
The META-MUSEUM project is continuing its journey into its third and final year with significant progress across multiple work packages. The TransforMEANS Theory (TMt) is being refined by combining survey insights with upcoming museum experiments. Prototype testing achieved a major milestone in early September with the first pilot at MuséoParc Alésia in France, where visitors tested digital and physical experiences such as “Carry the Coin” while exploring core human values and historical narratives. Insights from Alésia are now shaping the next prototype for MAC Barcelona, which will connect personal traits to historical roles, ahead of upcoming neuroscientific experiments. Meanwhile, UNIROMA1 has secured ethics approval to launch a study bringing digital cultural heritage into healthcare settings to evaluate its impact on patient wellbeing and resilience, alongside reflections on 24 months of communication and dissemination efforts. In Our Spotlight
Can our brains, bodies, and words reveal what a museum experience really does to us? The fourth issue of META-MUSEUM UNPACKED takes you inside a VU Amsterdam lab where EEG headsets, skin-conductance sensors, and force plates were used to measure how 51 participants from 23 countries responded to cultural heritage — from simple emotional images to an ancient Egyptian workers’ protest reimagined through AI. The results show that a single caption, or the choice between real and AI-generated imagery, can quietly reshape how confident, moved, or connected people feel. Read the full article
META-MUSEUM in Action
From podcasts to museum pilots, it’s been a busy few months for META-MUSEUM. Our Project Manager Gianluca D’Agostino sat down with Politecnico di Torino’s new podcast Change Makers to talk emotions, archaeology, and why cultural heritage belongs to everyone. Meanwhile, a new blogpost by Henrik Zipsane reflects on a provocative question raised by museum education students this summer: can — and should — museums collect visitor data to enhance experiences, when visitors expect museums to be “safe places”? On the collaboration front, META-MUSEUM joined four other EU projects in the new CONNECT EU HERITAGE Cluster video, exploring how combining forces across heritage innovation can create greater impact. And looking ahead, don’t miss MetaHeritage’s Pitching Showcase on 5 October, where selected cultural heritage and digital innovation projects will pitch to investors and partners.
Don’t miss out on the latest updates from the META-MUSEUM project!
